My past few summers have consisted of camp counseling and family vacations which have made them very memorable and meaningful, but by the time this summer rolled around, I was itching to film another music video. I am still in the process of recording my first album, so instead of filming a video for a new song, I decided to create a music video for one of the songs that has already been released on my Evergreen EP.
“I’ll Never Know Him” is heavily centered around vocal harmonies and guitar, with the guitar solo in the bridge sounding something like a Spanish sort of melody. When I produced the song with Corey Pavlosky at Pipe Dream Studios and listened to the final product, I imagined a Spanish guitarist finger-picking the solo featured in the bridge. I could also envision myself walking through the streets of Spain or some other ancient European city as I sang the lyrics. I considered working with an animator to portray this kind of dreamlike vision, but found myself hesitating to reach out to any freelance animators. I took that as a sign that I should wait on the Lord and see what other opportunities might spring up for making the music video.
Flash forward to this summer when my family would be visiting Europe, stopping at several cities in Italy and Spain. When my parents said we would stay in Barcelona for a couple days before officially embarking on our cruise, I took advantage of that small window of time and carved out a day for filming what I had envisioned in my head for “I’ll Never Know Him” - walking around the Spanish city, daydreaming and singing my song lyrics about heartache.
I was on the search for a local videographer to work with, but each potential collaboration fell through which was slightly disheartening. Then, a Portuguese pianist and composer by the name of Miguel Angelo reached out to me to see if I would be interested in recording vocals for his dark piano cover of “Adore You” by Harry Styles. It sounded like a fun project so I agreed. You can click here to listen to our cover on YouTube.
After the remote collaboration, Miguel's videographer Diogo Bras reached out to me to offer his services if I ever wanted to film another video for my songs. It finally seemed like an open door had presented itself, and I was ready to walk through it! His Portuguese friend, Ana Machado, also joined us for our project to offer her amazing photography services and capture some behind-the-scenes.
The whole experience (which only lasted a day) exceeded my expectations and I’m quite pleased with how the music video turned out. It was a fun whirlwind of a day, dressing up in three different outfits and strolling around Barcelona like I was some confident tourist who knew where I was going. Take a look at the map below for the different locations filmed in my music video.
I hope you enjoy watching the video as much I enjoyed acting in it. I’m grateful to Diogo Bras for bringing my creative vision to life and believing in my music enough to schedule the project and make it happen within a month’s notice. Originally, I had an in-depth script written out for my music video that went beyond lip syncing and wandering aimlessly through the city. Unfortunately, we were not able to secure the actors we had been in contact with. Still, I'm proud of how the music video turned out. If you do happen to listen to my song and wonder what other narrative could go along with its story, then maybe my script will inspire you and transport you into a movie-like narrative!
The following are the lyrics for my original song:
"I'll Never Know Him"
I saw a man from a distant light
Singing from a tune within his soul
You might perchance think he glanced my way
But as for logic who can really say
All the world's a stage, and there's different parts we play
That sometimes never cross
And you may think I'm strange, but to let this vision fade
Would be my greatest loss
For his eyes, and his smile and his curly locks
Paint a lovely image in my mind
And his grace, and his charm and his peace of mind
Give me hope that I once left behind
And I don't know him
No, I don't know him
Shall I compare thee to a summer day
Or a drifting memory reborn?
You came to part the seas that churned with gray
Shedding light on upon a love forlorn
All the world's a stage, and there's different parts we play
That sometimes never cross
And you may think I'm strange, but to let this vision fade
Would be my greatest loss
For his eyes, and his smile and his curly locks
Paint a lovely image in my mind
And his grace, and his charm and his peace of mind
Give me hope that I once left behind
And I don't know him
No, I don't know him
How can I know him
I’ll never know him
All the world's a stage, and there's different parts we play
That sometimes never cross
And you may think I'm strange, but to let this vision fade
Would be my greatest loss
For his eyes, and his smile and his curly locks
Paint a lovely image in my mind
And his grace, and his charm and his peace of mind
Give me hope that I once left behind
And I don't know him
No, I don't know him
How can I know him
I’ll never know him
